Last year, the Social Security Administration proposed a new rule that would impact recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI.) SSI is a federal program that provides aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income with cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
CFPA opposed the proposed rule, as it would impose new, unnecessarty bureaucratic burdens on SSI recipients. Rather than doing more to support the health and well-being of older adults and those individuals living with disabilities, this rule would reduce the number of people receiving disability benefits.
If enacted, this rule could also jeopardize the food benefits so desperately needed for older adults and people with disabilities in California. In particular a specific segment of SSI recipients who became eligible for California’s Supplemental Nutrition Benefits (SNB) or Temporary Nutrition Program (TNP), could permanently lose access to basic food assistance if the proposed additional red tape causes them lose access to SSI. CFPA’s comments call on the Administration to withdraw the proposed proposal.
