Week in Review: Short-term Farm Bill Extension Possible

Published on Jul 30, 2012 in CalFresh, Federal Advocacy

7.30.2012 This week House Republicans are expected to a vote a one-year farm bill extension which would include drought aid for farmers. This short-term bill would rush aid to drought affected farmers and ranchers before the August recess (recess begins August 3rd) and, as currently proposed, would not include cuts to SNAP.

What This Could Mean for CalFresh/SNAP

Under the current scenario it is possible that a one-year extension could be used as a vehicle to negotiate a comprehensive deal with the Senate. The Senate would ask for conference and House Speaker Boehner would decide whether or not to appoint conferees to work from the five-year bill proposed by the Ag Committee earlier this month. Speaker Boehner has not indicated whether or not the drought relief aid proposal would be part of larger farm bill discussion or simply a short-term extension.

With the August recess quickly approaching and the current farm bill expiring on September 30th major decisions will need to be made this week.

We continue to urge Members of Congress to support and protect SNAP by opposing any Farm Bill that cuts SNAP.
