CFPA Comments on Proposed Summer Food Changes

Published on Oct 10, 2013 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children

10.10.2013 Despite the harmful, ongoing shutdown of the federal government, USDA is still accepting public comments on a proposed rule about the Simplified Summer Food Service Program (Simplified SFSP). CFPA advocated the nationwide expansion of Simplified SFSP and we encourage USDA to continue strengthening this important program that helps ensure low-income children receive nutritious meals when school is out of session.

Thank you to our friends at FRAC for their attention to the proposed rule and model comments. CFPA’s comments on the proposed rule urge USDA to:

  • Emphasize the importance of meal quality and increase the capacity of sponsors to provide high quality meals;
  • Eliminate budget, monitoring, and funding procedures that would increase the administrative burden on meal sponsors and State agencies; and
  • Support the year-round provision of healthy meals through the connection between SFSP and the At-Risk Child and Adult Care Afterschool Meal/Snack Program
