1.15.2015 Prior to joining students for supper at Thomas Starr King Middle School, LAUSD Board Member Bennett Kayser announced that the district plans to expand the reach of their after school supper program.
LAUSD started its supper program in 2012 in collaboration with Beyond the Bell after school programs to provide anyone 18 years old or younger with access to a free and nutritious meal. The district now serves 70,000 supper meals a day at 584 schools. Supper programs provide an opportunity to bridge the hunger gap between lunch and dinner. Using a targeted approach, which includes outreach and a greater variety of freshly prepared meals, LAUSD expects to increase participation in the supper program by 36%. BBQ chicken slider, trail mix and cheese plate, and honey mustard chicken wrap are just a few examples of the new freshly prepared supper meals that students will enjoy.
According to Board Member Kayser, “The after school supper program has been a positive impact for our children and school community. The expansion of the supper program means students will get the nourishment they need to excel physically and academically.”
LAUSD’s nutrition programs are helping to close the hunger gap in Los Angeles County. We commend the district for taking bold steps in improving the reach of their after school supper program, while at the same time improving the quality of the meals so that student will benefit from a nutritious meal.
