AB 1871 Introduced: Food & Fairness for CA Students

Published on Jan 17, 2018 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children, State Legislation

1.17.2018 Yesterday, Assemblymember Bonta, along with co-authors Assemblymembers Chiu and Cristina Garcia, introduced a bill (AB 1871)

to give low-income, charter school students equitable access to school meals. CFPA is proud to sponsor this legislation. We believe in food and fairness for all children.

In 1975, during his very first year as governor, Jerry Brown signed a law to protect children from hunger by guaranteeing that all low-income, public school students would have access to at least one free or low-cost school meal each school day. Charter school students are not protected under this law.

California charter schools are public schools. They are growing rapidly throughout the state and currently enroll more than 340,000 students whose families are struggling to make ends meet. AB 1871 will help all low-income, public school students in California — including charter school students — be well nourished and ready to learn.
