3.31.16 AB 2099 (Stone)-Safe Drinking Water passed the Assembly Human Services committee on Tuesday Mar. 29 with a 6-0 unanimous, bi-partisan vote with committee amendments. A great thanks to all of our supporters who submitted letters in support of AB 2099 and made it out to the hearing in person.

Supporting testimony was provided by Asha Kreiling from Community Water Center and Tracey Patterson from CFPA. Asha emphasized the challenges families in disadvantaged communities across the Central Valley face as they deal with water quality issues that make it difficult for them to access safe drinking water. Tracey spoke to how the State’s Electronic Benefit Transfer system can help reach households that are missed by the State’s current efforts to address unsafe drinking water. AB 2099 will now be heard on April 12 in the Assembly Committee on Environment Safety and Toxic Materials.

If you’d like to show your support for AB 2099 there’s still time to submit your letter. A sample letter is available. Doc

AB 2099 intends to leverage the State’s Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) system to deliver interim, supplemental benefits to low-income California households without safe drinking water. Committee Amendments to the bill direct the Department of Social Services to convene a workgroup by February 1, 2017 to develop recommendations for delivering a water benefit to low-income households without safe drinking water.
