Anti-Hunger Partners Comment on the Next Farm Bill

Published on Sep 7, 2017 in CalFresh, Federal Advocacy

9.7.2017 In collaboration with the California Hunger Action Coalition , CFPA recently submitted comments to the House Ag Committee putting forward our shared priorities for the 2018 Farm Bill. PDF

In coalition, we urged the Committee to prioritize fighting hunger and improving nutrition by investing more in SNAP when the Farm Bill is next reauthorized. We were not alone in calling on the House to support SNAP. The California Department of Food and Agriculture, in collaboration with several other state agencies, recommended the Committee maintain robust funding for food and nutrition programs and make a number of significant program improvements to increase access to SNAP for low-income Californians. Comments submitted by CFPA and our anti-hunger partners are a response to the House Agriculture Committee’s call for comments on the next Farm Bill. Throughout the month of August, the Committee held listening sessions in cities across the country, including two in California (Salinas and Modesto), reflecting California’s importance as the country’s largest agricultural producer. The listening tours were one of the first opportunities to influence the next Farm Bill. U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway (TX-11) has expressed an intent to move quickly on drafting the next farm bill. It is anticipated that a draft bill may be released as early as January.

UPDATE TO POST: YOU CAN NOW SUBMIT YOUR OWN COMMENTS ON THE NEXT FARM BILL TO THE SENATE AG COMMITTEE

If you were not able to provide comment during the House Agriculture Committee’s listening sessions it is not too late to provide recommendations for the next Farm Bill. The Senate Agriculture Committee is accepting comments on the next Farm Bill through September 21 at 2pm (PST). The Committee has encouraged submission of written comments through this online portal.
