Assembly Member Bocanegra Introduces AB 191!

Published on Feb 8, 2013 in CalFresh, State Legislation

2.8.2013 Assembly Member Raul Bocanegra, representing the 39th District, has introduced AB 191. Sponsored by CFPA, AB 191 proposes to strengthen the connection between CalFresh and Medi-Cal by making households with a Medi-Cal recipient (with income up to 200% FPL) categorically eligible for CalFresh. For categorically eligible households with a Medi-Cal recipient, the gross income limit would be raised from the current limit of 130% FPL to 200% FPL. The goal of the proposal is to increase the likelihood that low-income households with a Medi-Cal recipient also receive nutrition benefits via CalFresh.

Reduced food insecurity and improved access to nutritious foods are fundamental goals of CalFresh. These objectives are also strongly linked to supporting the overall health and well-being of participants. In an effort to further the connection between nutrition and health, the link between CalFresh and other health benefits  should be strengthened. Californians should receive a comprehensive package of benefits, including CalFresh, that supports overall good health.
