Berkeley Residents Pass Tax on Sugary Beverages

Published on Nov 18, 2014

11.18.2014 Earlier this month, the residents of Berkeley, CA passed an unprecedented measure to tax distributors of sugar-sweetened beverages. Measure D, needing only a simple majority to pass, garnered 75% of votes, making Berkeley the first city in the nation to enact a tax related to sugary beverages.

Revenues generated from the tax will benefit the city’s general fund. Measure D requires that an appointed panel of unpaid experts (specializing in child nutrition, healthcare, and/or education) be formed to advise the City Council about spending the revenue on programs that support children’s health.

For more than two decades, CFPA has developed, incubated, and advance evidence-based policies to improve the health and well-being of low-income Californians by increasing their access to nutritious, affordable food. In the spirit of this mission, we value public policies that support health and healthy eating for all Californians. Measure D marks a historic improvement to our food systems. We applaud the residents of Berkeley for their commitment to the health of their children and their community.
