4.18.2014 This past Wednesday Breakfast in the Classroom added a new fan to the club – Jordana Brewster, actress from the Fast and the Furious movie franchise.
Jordana Brewster may be the newest and most widely known Breakfast in the Classroom fan and a potenial new spokesperson for the Share Our Strength – No Kid Hungry campaign. She joined us in observing a Breakfast in the Classroom program at Wilkerson Elementary School in El Monte City School District. She was horrified to hear that many students don’t have access to the most important meal of the day and even when it is made available in school cafeterias early in the morning, many times there is a stigma attached to participating.
El Monte City School District has implemented Breakfast in the Classroom in all of their schools ensuring each and every student has access to the morning meal before beginning their lessons. We listened to teachers who spoke so highly of how the program helps their students start the day right, ready to learn and focused on the lessons at hand. Principal Munoz, the ultimate advocate for his students, also praised the work of Dr. Robert Lewis, the Director of Nutrition Services and nutrition services department for rolling out this program. They are seeing more students arrive on time, have fewer days absent from school and doing better and better academically. Wilkerson Elementary School is a Gold level awardee from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation – one of only four in the country and much of that is due to the work of Principal Munoz. You can hear more about it here.
Congratulations Wilkerson Elementary, Principal Munoz, Dr. Robert Lewis and El Monte City School District for truly putting your students first!
