Take Action! Call & Email for Food Access in State Budget

Published on May 28, 2019

As we head into State Budget Conference, key Senators and Assemblymembers need to hear from you! Our state budget should reflect our values: all people deserve access to healthy, fresh meals, and California must take action to make that a reality. Activate your network to include funding for equitable access to fresh, healthy school meals and easier enrollment into CalFresh in the state budget!

Please contact the following legislators for improved access to healthy school meals and CalFresh today!

Your outreach should target the State Legislators on the Budget Conference Committee. This Committee will decide whether funding for improved food access will be included in the Legislature’s final budget. This should take you just a few minutes. If emailing, please title the subject line “SUPPORT Food Access in Conference (#16 & 17 in K-12, #62 CalFresh)”:

  • Senator Holly Mitchell, Budget Chair (D-Los Angeles) P: (916) 651-4030
  • Assemblymember Phil Ting, Budget Co-Chair (D-San Francisco) P: (916) 319-2019
  • Please also spend a few minutes contacting the Budget Conferees. Use a group email to save time! While State Budget decisions are made with statewide impact in mind, please share any local stories or impact to provide context:

  • Senator John Moorlach (R-Costa Mesa) P: (916) 651-4037
  • Senator Jim Nielsen (R-Tehama) P: (916) 651-4004
  • Senator Richard Roth (D-Riverside) P: (916) 651-4030
  • Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) P: (916) 651-4009
  • Assemblymember Chad Mayes (R-Yucca Valley) P: (916) 319-2042
  • Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) P:(916) 319-2007
  • Assemblymember Jay Obernolte (R-Hesperia) P: (916) 319-2033

Hello. My name is ________. I live in ________, CA. I am calling to support three critical investments in Budget Conference to improve food access for low-income Californians in historically under-served communities. Please support:

  • Issue 62: Senate Proposal for Simplified CalFresh Applications for Seniors ($1 mill, one-time project)
  • Issue 16: Senate Proposal for CA-Grown for Healthy Kids ($15.3 mill per year)
  • Issue 17: Assembly Proposal for School Breakfast After the Bell Grants ($3 mill, one-time over 3 years)

[choose one or more of the following reasons or tell them your own]

  • California is the 5th largest economy in the world, and we produce more food then any other state in the nation, yet more than 4 million Californians can’t afford enough food to get by. The State Budget is a statement of values: please show us you care about Californians having the food needed to be healthy and thrive.
