5.3.2016 On behalf of the Board of Directors of the California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA), Chair Valerie Ruelas announced the addition of Marvin Espinoza, M.Ed. and Dr. Dena Herman, PhD, MPH, RD to the Board. Mr. Espinoza and Dr. Herman were introduced at the May 2016 meeting of Directors.
“Marvin and Dena bring so much knowledge and experience to Board service with CFPA,” said Ms. Ruelas. “With these additions to the governing Board of California Food Policy Advocates, we are adding decades of experience in education, health, and nutrition.”
Mr. Espinoza is the Chief Operating Officer of the Jeffrey Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for special needs children and their families. In the past, he has worked for First 5 LA, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and as program director for the 5 a Day Campaign. Mr. Espinoza is also adjunct faculty at East Los Angeles College where he has taught health and wellness courses since 2007.
Dr. Herman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Northridge. She received an M.P.H. and Ph.D. in Community Health Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles and an M.S. in Nutrition Sciences from the Friedrich-Wilhelms, Universitaet, Bonn, Germany. Dr. Herman is an expert in maternal and child health, in food security, and in health disparities for underserved populations. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
For over 20 years, CFPA has researched, incubated, and advanced real world policy solutions that increase low-income Californians’access to healthy food. As a non-profit entity, CFPA relies on its Board of Directors to govern and to lead the organization into the future.
