Today, 1 in 8 California households struggle to afford enough food. Disproportionately, they are low-income households of color. Many include young children. Our state invests in low-income children through school meals, but does not provide similar funding to support our youngest learners. In 2012, 85% of child care centers and family child care homes that served healthy meals to children through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) lost state funding – even though virtually all of the children they serve live in poverty. Following the cut, thousands of children lost access to healthy meals served through the CACFP.

After a decade of budget crises and dire fiscal conditions for the field of early childhood, California has finally turned the page. Policymakers have the opportunity to rebuild our state’s early childhood system to support the future of California’s children. For just $16.7 million the state can support the provision of over 72 million meals annually to low-income children in child care.
