6.21.2013 On Thursday the House rejected the Farm Bill (H.R. 1947) by a vote of 234 to 195. The final proposal included a $20.5 billion cut to SNAP, and several harmful amendments that would permit states to conduct drug testing on applicants, put a lifetime ban on former violent offenders, and impose harsh work requirements on SNAP participants.
CFPA joined local, state, and national efforts to urge Congress to restore the SNAP cuts, and oppose any final proposal that included cuts. Several of California’s representatives stood up and defended SNAP during debate, and others participated in a SNAP challenge to protest the cuts. We are grateful for their support.
Please take a moment to thank your representative if they voted “yes” on the McGovern amendment to restore the SNAP cuts and “no” on final passage of the farm bill.
