NFLAF Coalition Delivers CalFresh Recommendations to LA DPSS Director Spiller

Published on Jul 17, 2013 in CalFresh

7.17.2013 NFLAF developed a letter to LA DPSS’ Director Sheryl Spiller, and included the Coalition’s Recommendations for CalFresh Solutions document which identifies new approaches to increase CalFresh enrollment.

The Coalition’s recommendations include strategies that will benefit children ages 0-5 and by default will also reach other CalFresh eligible, but not participating populations.

Here is a summary of the Coalition’s recommendations.

In-reach. Many Angelenos who are eligible for, but not participating in CalFresh may be receiving other public benefits. In-reach is a tool to better inform, connect, and enroll households into CalFresh using other public benefit programs.

Consistency. With many district offices and dozens of programs to administer, the 13,000 LADPSS staff face a formidable task: implementing benefit determinations for nearly one million county residents in an environment of ever changing-laws, regulations and funding.

Modernization. The redesign of LEADER and Business Process Re-engineering are timely triggers that should initiate LADPSS’ new process of hearing from its closest partners and client representatives. These local voices, client experiences, observations, and ideas should be incorporated into LADPSS’ modernizations efforts.
