Nourish California and Partners to Highlight Who serves the “A” in The Child and Adult Care Food Program(CACFP)

Let's Review...

There is a lot happening in child nutrition programs, and we’re here to keep you updated and engaged. Coming up fast, are three big opportunities for significant change at the federal level: the infrastructure package (American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan), the discretionary budget, and Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR). As CNR discussions ramp up there will be a brighter than usual spotlight on the Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

CACFP is primarily known as a program serving children. Less well known is that it also serves nutritious meals and snacks to Californians with low incomes who are 65 and older and adults living with a disability.

Access to nutritious and affordable food is important at any age. But for older adults, food insecurity and malnutrition exacerbate chronic diet-related diseases, medical costs, and can ultimately lead to premature death.

The May revision of Governor Newsom’s Master Plan for Aging includes significant investments in older adult services infrastructure including $17.5 million dollars for senior nutrition specifically — demonstrating what should be clear and obvious to decision makers — when it comes to older adults we must make significant investments to meet urgent needs.

What's Next ?

Nourish California is working to understand more about the barriers to nutritious food access for older adults in California. We have special interest in those older adults who are currently being served by federal and state nutrition programs, yet still experience food insecurity and/or malnutrition. The Child and ADULT Care Food Program is an important piece of the senior nutrition safety net, yet too often an overlooked resource.

SAVE THE DATE  6/3 ! Help us understand the barriers to adult nutrition in the Child Adult Care Food Program.

JOIN US! June 3rd, at 11am as Nourish California and the CACFP Roundtable host a Virtual Town Hall. We hope to listen, learn and create space for older adult operators of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) to share experiences with this lesser known component of the food program.
