Nourish California envisions a future where Californians of all sexual orientations and gender identities can thrive. Even before recent escalation of attacks on LGBTQ+ communities at the federal level, inequities in access to food and basic needs have long persisted, disproportionately impacting those who are low-income, Black and Brown, and transgender and/or gender nonconforming. This seed campaign aims to listen and learn from directly impacted communities about their experiences in meeting their food needs. We hope to build on what we learn to co-create meaningful policy solutions that address inequities and create a more just and inclusive California.
As we build this seed campaign, we are learning that the experiences of food insecurity among LGBTQ+ communities are diverse - for example, 3 in 4 transgender adults experienced food insecurity in 2023, compared to 44% of cisgender adults. By centering the experiences of those facing the greatest barriers, we can seek policy solutions that have greater and lasting impact on communities of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
