Background: What Is the Farm Bill?
Every five years, the United States updates a huge package of laws called the Farm Bill. This law helps shape our food system and affects what people eat, how farmers make a living, and how communities stay healthy and strong.
The Farm Bill covers farm programs, food assistance, conservation, rural development, nutrition education, and more. It’s one of the biggest pieces of federal law that affects how food gets from farms to families. It also decides how much money goes to critical nutrition programs like SNAP (CalFresh in California)
SNAP helps millions of people afford groceries each month, including children, older adults, veterans, and working families.
What’s Happening Now?
In February 2026, House Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn “G.T.” Thompson (R-PA) introduced the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (also known as the 2026 Farm Bill).
The Committee on Agriculture passed the bill on March 5, 2026. Several California Representatives voted in favor of this harmful legislation.
Now Congress is working to move it forward and is preparing to vote this week.
We, along with national and state advocates, believe this Farm Bill is detrimental to our communities and invite you to raise your voice and urge your representative to VOTE NO on this bill.
Your voice can help inform legislators about critical needs in your community and urge them to VOTE NO on the Farm Bill.
The Farm Bill might seem big and complicated, but at its heart, it’s about making sure families can afford food and that farmers and rural communities thrive. Your voice matters right now.
Why Are Advocates Concerned With The Proposed Farm Bill?
The Farm Bill affects whether people have enough to eat. It determines how strong SNAP and other food programs are. If the next Farm Bill doesn’t fix harmful cuts and barriers, thousands of Californians could go without the food support they rely on every day.
Nourish California strongly opposes this oppressive legislation. We must act now to stop policies that harm our communities.
