Across California, too many neighborhoods have lost grocery stores and never seen food access return. The Missing Market Project is a community-led research effort that will document former grocery sites, identify patterns of restrictive land-use practices, and strengthen the case for AB 1857.
We’re documenting these “missing markets” to better understand what may be preventing new stores from opening and to strengthen policy solutions, including support for AB 1857.
How do I participate?
If you know of a former grocery store location in your community that has not been replaced, please take a few minutes to complete the Missing Market form. Your input will help:
- Identify missing markets
- Surface patterns that may be limiting new grocery retailers
- Build the evidence needed to advance lasting change
This effort centers community knowledge. What you’ve seen, experienced, or observed matters.
