One Step Closer to Hunger-Free Early Care

Published on Aug 30, 2019 in Child Nutrition, State Legislation, Young Children

Today the Senate Appropriations Committee, chaired by Senator Anthony Portantino, passed AB 842 out of committee! AB 842 is a state bill authored by Assemblymembers Limón and Eggman that, if passed, would provide guaranteed access to a nutritious, free or low-cost meal for our youngest public school students while also eliminating a longstanding inequity to the state supplemental meal reimbursement, a policy that only reimbursed prop 98 eligible family child care home providers for 75% versus 100% of all the meals served to eligible, low-income children.

A big thank you to Assemblymember Limón for championing this bill, to Senator Anthony Portantino for moving the bill out of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and to California State PTA for leading some successful advocacy with the Senator. Most importantly, thank you to all of you for demonstrating wide support for this important piece of legislation from day one! Next, AB 842 will head to the Senate floor for a full vote.

Stay tuned for future opportunities to support the bill as it moves forward. In the mean time, take a moment to thank Senator Portantino for his support on moving AB 842 out of his committee!
