Fight Fear With Facts as New Public Charge Rule Takes Effect

Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) begins implementation of its new public charge rule. This means persons who apply for a green card or a visa to enter the U.S. on or after February 24th, 2020 will have to meet stricter standards for income, health, and other factors to be granted admission under the new rule. Immigration officials may now consider receipt of certain public programs as a negative factor, including federal CalFresh, Medi-Cal, and housing assistance.

 

Public charge does not apply to all immigrants.
The rule only applies to a subset of immigrants who are seeking a change in status. Please help empower immigrant communities with accurate information. Public charge resources.
