07.02.2012 Advocacy efforts by child care stakeholders were successful in grabbing the attention of the Assembly and Senate budget committees, who restored the funding for CACFP state meal reimbursements in their version of the budget. Unfortunately, last week the Governor ignored the legislators’ stance on child care nutrition and penciled this item back into the budget. In total, $10.1 million to the non-Proposition 98 General Fund for state reimbursement of CACFP meals was eliminated.
The state funding for CACFP programs has been in place since 1975 and helps support the serving of nutritious meals and snacks to low-income children in child care. In California, over 25,000 child care facilities participate in CACFP, translating to nearly 440,000 children served. Of these child care facilities, approximately 90% are non-Prop 98 agencies.
