Join us in asking USDA to extend several COVID-19 child nutrition waivers necessary for school reopening.
Last March, when coronavirus forced schools to shut down or move online, thousands of schools and community organizations across the state stepped up to serve the nutritional needs of students by setting up free grab-and-go meal sites. Now, as we head into the fall, they may lose their ability to make free school meals available to all children in their community, unless the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approves several critical child nutrition waivers.
Thanks to advocacy from schools and community partners, USDA recently extended several child nutrition waivers through next school year. Unfortunately, several waiver extensions have also been denied, including waivers that would enable schools and afterschool partners to make free meals and snacks available to more communities this fall. State agencies and organizations across the United States are weighing in with USDA. Please consider joining us in demanding that USDA grant these critical waivers for California.
