Grants for Cities to Support Afterschool and Summer Meals

Published on Jul 25, 2014 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children

7.25.2014  The Institute for Youth, Education and Families invites cities to apply for grant awards of up to $50,000 to build capacity and increase participation in the federal Afterschool and Summer Meal Programs. These funds will be granted through the Cities Combating Hunger through Afterschool and Summer Meals (CHAMPs) Initiative. Mayors and other city officials can ensure that children in their communities have access to nutritious meals by promoting and supporting these vital federal nutrition programs.

The National League of Cities (NLC), in partnership with the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), has provided grants and technical assistance to 26 cities to help to expand participation in these meal programs. This year, through grants and technical assistance to municipalities, NLC will continue these efforts with a new cohort of 6 to 8 cities.

NLC will select cities through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process based on cities’commitment to launching or expanding local efforts to provide afterschool and summer meals utilizing the federal programs resulting in year-round feeding opportunities for children.
