12.13.16 For over two decades, CFPA has incubated and advanced innovative policy solutions to increase low-income Californians’ access to nutritious, affordable food. State policy can make a significant impact in reducing food insecurity.
The time for California to lead the fight against hunger is now. We envision a healthy and food secure California for all residents. CFPA is calling on the State Legislature and Governor Brown to take action in support of this vision.
CFPA’s 2017 Policy Actions
- Count Me In! Expand Access to Nutritious School Meals: Ensure that school districts use Medi-Cal to identify students for free and reduced-price meals, and that the highest poverty schools use options to serve meals free of cost to students.
- Empower California Nutrition Assistance to Meet Changing Needs: Create flexibility that allows California Food Assistance to be a responsive, adaptable and forward-thinking nutrition program that works for Californians in need.
- Drinking Water Relief for Struggling Californians: Allow for emergency supplemental nutrition benefits if households must use CalFresh benefits to purchase drinking water when water systems fail and pose a health threat.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated in CFPA’s 2017 policy development process earlier this year. We truly appreciated the time and thoughtfulness of those who completed interviews and our survey. We were grateful for the input from local anti-hunger and food security coalitions that welcomed us at meetings and events. The feedback and insights gathered were invaluable in establishing our 2017 legislative agenda.
