06.08.2017 SB 138 (McGuire) made it through the Senate with unanimous, bipartisan support and will move on to the Assembly! Thank you for your advocacy and support thus far – we are now another step closer to increasing the number of hunger free schools in California. We are grateful to Senator McGuire who has championed this issue and helped SB 138 pass off the Senate floor last week with a 40-0 vote!
Next stop for SB 138 is the Assembly Committee on Education, where it will be heard on June 21st. Unexpected amendments were made by the Senate Committee on Appropriations. CFPA and the author’s office are working quickly to make amendments to SB 138 that will include a universally free meal provision for very high poverty schools. Please stay tuned for a call-to-action: Early next week once amendments are made, we will come back to you with an urgent request of support.
SB 138 (McGuire)- Count Me In: Expand Access to School Meals, aims to enroll more than 650,000 students directly into school meals through Medi-Cal Direct Certification, which will enable schools to make meals available free of charge to all students through a universal meal provision.
