AB 1508 Introduced! Breakfast After the Bell Program

Published on Apr 23, 2019 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children, State Legislation

Assemblymember Bonta (D-Oakland) has amended AB 1508 into a bill to support effective Breakfast After the Bell programs. AB 1508 will be heard in Assembly Education on Wednesday, April 24. CFPA is co-sponsoring AB 1508 with our partners at No Kid Hungry—California.

AB 1508 will sustain state grants for the start-up and expansion of effective breakfast after the bell programs in schools serving low-income communities, with prioritization for high-poverty schools. Grant funds may be used for any costs associated with the startup or expansion of breakfast after the bell programs to help schools meet the needs of their school community.

To ensure accountability for the effectiveness of Breakfast After the Bell Program grant funds and to track improvement among grant-funded school sites relative to schools that do not receive grant funds, AB 1508 also directs the Department of Education to collect site-level data about school breakfast service models at all California school sites operating school breakfast programs.
