Four hours into a marathon, five-hour hearing, AB 1871 (Bonta) came up for a vote in the Assembly Education Committee.
With 30 supporters on record, 20 supporters in the room, and more than 340,000 low-income children not protected by current state law, Assemblymember Bonta captured the heart of the issue in a single moment:
“Kids need to have a meal…I put that in the category of fundamental, foundational needs…whether you’re in a traditional public school or a public charter school.”
The committee agreed and passed the bill with four aye votes.
