AB 292 Introduced by Assemblymember Santiago!

Published on Feb 12, 2015 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children, State Legislation

2.12.2015 Today Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (Los Angeles) introduced AB 292, Time to Eat: Lunchtime Supports Learning. This CFPA-sponsored bill will ensure that students are given at least 20 minutes to eat after being served lunch at school.

AB 292 is Assemblymember Santiago’s first introduced bill in the Legislature, and reflects his strong commitment to health and education. The bill aims to improve student nutrition, support academic achievement, and reduce food waste. When students have enough time to eat a complete lunch at school, they are better able to focus and learn. AB 292 is based on last session’s AB 2449 (Bocanegra), which enjoyed wide support from education and nutrition stakeholders.

The school lunch program helps students learn, grow and achieve. We have a responsibility to meet students’most basic needs during the school day. By ensuring that students have the time they need to eat, California has the opportunity to more effectively spend critical resources that support school lunches.
