9.13.2013 The House is expected to vote later next week on the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act, which includes a $40 billion cut to SNAP. Because the House passed a partial farm bill earlier this summer that only addressed agriculture policies, this bill covers the remaining nutrition title. Splitting the farm bill into two sections is unprecented, and poses great threats to nutrition programs.
House Republicans have not yet released details about the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act, though it is likely to include strict work requirements and impose restrictions on categorical eligibility and “Heat and Eat” initiatives that reduce paperwork and streamline enrollment.
