6.15.2011 CFPA’s 2011 release of School’s Out…Who Ate? examines the dramatic decline in summer meal access and participation throughout California. The report includes data specific to each of California’s 58 counties and recommendations for federal, state, and local actions to close the summer nutrition gap.
Across our state, more than 80% of children who access free or reduced-price school lunches during the academic year miss out on the benefits of the federal summer nutrition programs. Participation in these programs fell by 15 percent from July 2009 to July 2010; 25 percent from July 2008; and a full 50 percent from 2002.
