6.14.2012 On Tuesday, June 12th, California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC) members presented Los Angeles Unified Food Services Director Dennis Barrett with his 2012 Hunger Fighter Award honoring his six years of service to Los Angeles students. Under Dennis’s leadership, Food Services Division has increased participation in the School Breakfast, Lunch, and Afterschool Snack Programs by over 200,000 additional daily meals and snacks served and begun implementing an enormous plan to bring Breakfast In The Classroom to another 250,000 students over the next three years.
By focusing on improving student access and participation, Dennis led efforts to ensure students have adequate time to eat in modernized facilities, eliminate tickets, provide free meals through expansion of direct certification, Provision 2 and classroom breakfast and through a relentless focus on serving the students as customers. Food Services Division also implemented a program to donate leftover lunches to nearby food pantries and soup kitchens.
