Movement Leaders: Two Transitions

As the movement to ensure all Californians have enough to eat marches on, we want to acknowledge two dynamic leaders.

Paul Ash
Paul Ash led the SF-Marin Food Bank for over three decades. He recently retired from the Food Bank. We have worked with Paul since our founding in San Francisco in 1992. We have watched Paul grow the Food Bank both in terms of pounds of food distributed and in advocacy power. Paul was a leader among food banks in moving into advocacy and justice work. Nourish California has worked very closely with Paul on a number of campaigns over the years, most frequently in efforts to improve CalFresh. Paul has been a vocal critic of the inefficiencies and ineffectiveness associated with California's county-administered CalFresh program. We have worked with Paul to increase CalFresh participation in his own communities and joined him on efforts to urge policymakers to modernize the program. More recently, we joined forces on a call to action to boost nutrition benefits to stimulate the economy during the Covid-19 crisis. We wish Paul all the best in this transition.
Marion Standish
In January, Marion Standish stepped down as Senior Vice President at The California Endowment (TCE). At TCE Marion oversaw multiple grant-making initiatives focused on transforming communities to reduce inequities and improve health. While at the Endowment, she was a strategic partner on numerous efforts to improve food access in California and played important roles in our advocacy wins over the years. Marion hasn't just been a strategic partner and supporter, she was one of the founders of California Food Policy Advocates, now Nourish California. You can watch Marion reflect on the founding at our 20th Anniversary in 2012. The advocacy skills and experiences Marion brought to our organization from her work at the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation greatly shaped who we were at our founding and who we continue to be. We are so grateful for all that Marion has done for Nourish California and wish her the best in this transition.
