Today, California’s Senate Committee on Education voted yes for fresh, California-grown fruits and veggies in schools! SB 499 (McGuire), garnered bipartisan support and will move on to the Senate Committee on Appropriations! SB 499, the California-Grown for Healthy Kids Act, would create and sustain equitable, healthy, hunger free schools through an extra 10¢ per breakfast reimbursement to purchase California-grown fresh fruits and vegetables for districts providing universally free school meals.

Thank you to Senator McGuire for his leadership on this issue, the Senate Education Committee for recognizing the importance of SB 499, and all the supporters of the bill who wrote letters and showed up at the hearing.

Next, SB 499 will move on to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. At the same time, we are launching a budget campaign to make sure there is full funding for the SB 499 California-Grown for Healthy Kids Program.
