SB 107 (Wiener) passed out of Senate Human Services today on a unanimous, bipartisan vote. Nourish California and our bill cosponsors, AARP-CA, CA Association of Food Banks, and San Francisco-Marin Food Bank would like to thank the bill’s supporters for such a strong showing at today’s hearing. Over 50 organizations and individuals across the state submitted letters of support, and over 20 organizations called in to the hearing to express support during public comment. We are grateful for all who took time out of their busy schedules to make their voices heard. Together, we can make meaningful, permanent improvements to ease CalFresh access and reduce hunger and poverty.
We would like to give a special thank you to Lourdes Gonzalez, CalFresh Specialist at Feeding San Diego. Lourdes provided powerful testimony at the hearing about the barriers older adults and others face in navigating the overly complicated CalFresh application process. We greatly appreciate her willingness to share her on-the-ground experience with the Committee in support of SB 107.
