Senator Wiener Introduces SB 285- CalFresh Connect!

Published on Feb 21, 2019 in CalFresh, State Legislation

Last week, Senator Scott Wiener (San Francisco) introduced SB 285, which sets clear goals and accountability for CalFresh enrollment so that more eligible, low-income Californians will be connected to CalFresh within integrated social safety net.

SB 285 would achieve the following:

  • Ensure excellent and equitable access to CalFresh, regardless of county of residence, by setting ambitious but achievable goals for CalFresh access, and streamlining the application and retention process to make it easier to successfully receive CalFresh benefits
  • Require the State to provide counties with simplified applications for seniors and disabled applicants; timely and accurate translated applications and materials; conduct ongoing user experience testing with CalFresh applicants and clients; and providing guidance for effective, targeted improvements
  • Plan to implement a user-friendly, universal application to CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKS and WIC when the state moves to a single automated state system for social services in 2023.
  • We applaud Senator Wiener’s leadership on SB 285, but we need your help to show broad support to the Legislature. You can support SB 285 by joining CFPA and our co-sponsors, the SF-Marin Food Bank, AARP-CA, and the California Association of Food Banks, in sending in a letter of support today.
