A new federal education law known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) holds the promise of increasing access to resources for wellness in our schools. Several policy and funding provisions in ESSA support student wellness and can be leveraged to help meet students’ nutritional needs. However, California’s current plan misses a tremendous opportunity to more fully integrate nutrition into education policy and practice.

All states are required to develop a state plan for implementation of ESSA. The California Department of Education is currently seeking feedback on their draft plan. Addressed to our education decision makers in Sacramento, this sign-on letter urges the California Department of Education to ensure that ESSA is leveraged to help more students access the academic and health benefits of school nutrition programs.
