Urge Governor Newsom to Adopt Legislature’s Universal School Meals Proposal

Published on Jun 10, 2021 in Child Nutrition, School-Aged Children, State Legislation

The State Legislature's 2021-22 budget package includes a bold proposal championed by Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) to fund free school meals for all California K-12 students. The Governor's May Revise also included a significant proposed investment in universal school meals. Our state budget can fight childhood hunger and invest in the well being of our students. Let's make that a reality. We urge Governor Newsom to enact the Legislature's school meal budget proposal.

School Meals for Every California Kid

All children deserve to be well nourished and thrive. School meals are an essential resource that help students learn, grow, and achieve at their fullest potential. By connecting children with the nutritious food they need, we can help close systemic opportunity gaps that harm students with low income and students of color, particularly Black and Latinx children, across California.

Throughout the pandemic, time-limited federal waivers have allowed schools to serve meals free of charge to all children. Looking forward, state investments like those proposed in the Legislature's budget package will help ensure no California student misses out on the meals they need. Tell Governor Newsom that now is the time to nourish our students!

State leaders are making budget decisions in the coming days. Please make your voice heard today!
