7.10.2013 CFPA’s 2013 release of School’s Out…Who Ate? examines statewide trends in summer meal participation, provides county-level data, and offers policy and practice recommendations to close the summer nutrition gap. As many as 2.1 million (or 83 percent) of California’s low-income children and youth who benefit from federally funded, free or reduced-price lunches during the school year miss out on such lunches during the summer.
Children need year-round access to nutritious meals that combat hunger and food insecurity, support learning, and help prevent obesity. How many children in your community are falling into the summer nutrition gap?
