5.23.2014 An amended AB 2449 (Bocanegra) Adequate Time to Eat was taken off suspense and passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee today! AB 2449 would ensure that students have enough time to sit down and eat a nutritious lunch at school. It emphasizes the crucial role of nutrition in supporting academic achievement and student health. We’d like to thank Assembly Member Bocanegra and all of our partners whose hard work ensured AB 2449’s success thus far!
In order to better define “adequate” time and the existing funding streams that support school meal service, Assembly Member Bocanegra offered amendments to AB 2449 that: (1) refer to the 2013 California Department of Education guidelines that define ‘adequate time’ to eat lunch as a minimum of 20 minutes after being served, and (2) clarify that cafeteria funds can defray the costs of food service improvements that increase students’time to eat. We are awaiting confirmation as to which amendments were taken by the Appropriations Committee. We will provide updates on the amendments as they become available.
