Still time to act! Tell Governor Newsom to invest in food security today

Yesterday, the State Legislature passed AB 128, the State Budget Act of 2021, in advance of the constitutional deadline of June 15. While often the passage of the annual budget bill would mean a deal had been reached between the legislature and administration, that is not the case this year. Negotiations are ongoing; a deal could be reached soon or continue later into the summer.

This means we cannot stop our advocacy. In fact, we need to step it up further. We need broad and vocal support to urge the Governor to include the major investments in an equitable nutrition safety net proposed by the legislature in the final state budget he signs. Don’t wait, contact the Governor today.

If enacted, the proposal would modernize the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) by expanding eligibility to all those excluded from CalFresh solely due to immigration status.

The Legislature’s proposal includes critical investments to support child care meal service, including one time COVID-19 relief to account for the increased cost of serving food during the pandemic and ongoing funding to supplement the cost of serving child care meals.
